  • Star Track: William Thomas

William Thomas of Yorktown, a Grafton High graduate, made the All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball first team as a sophomore first baseman for St. Augustine's College. Teams were selected before the CIAA tournament. Coming into that, Thomas ranked ninth in the conference with 23 runs batted in. In conference regular-season games, he tied for the sixth-most RBI (15) and was fifth in batting (.404). Thomas finished at .307 (39-for-127) in 42 games, 38 of which he started. He had 18 runs, six doubles, a home run and 23 RBI. The 5-foot-11, 245-pounder achieved an equal number of free passes (18 walks and six times hit by a pitch) to strikeouts (24), and he stole seven bases in eight tries. The Falcons finished 18-28, 10-10 in the conference, and lost 6-5 to Winston-Salem State and 13-4 to Chowan in the CIAA tournament. As a freshman, when the Falcons were 26-22 overall and 13-5 in the CIAA regular season, Thomas made the conference All-Rookie squad. That season, he hit .293 (27-for-92), with 12 runs, two doubles, a homer and 18 RBI in 32 games, including 28 starts. He walked nine times, was hit by two pitches and struck out 14 times. With Grafton, Thomas was an All-Bay Rivers District second-team performer in 12th grade, when he batted .392 with 23 RBI, slugging a memorable three-run homer in a 5-2 to right-center field in a 2012 win against York on his Senior Day. At St. Aug's, located in Raleigh, N.C., Thomas is majoring in sport management.
