'Sinister 2' to film in Chicago

The sequel to the 2012 surprise hit “Sinister” will film entirely in the Chicago area for one month beginning in August, according to a spokesman for Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind the horror film.

The first film starred Ethan Hawke as a true crime novelist who moves his family into a home where several murders took place. He discovers a box in the attic with 8mm home movies of the slayings, some of which feature a mysterious figure in the background known as Mr. Boogie. Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill wrote the movie and also its sequel. But unlike in the first film, Ciaran Foy will direct rather than Derrickson.

“It was a laborious process,” Derrickson told Joblo.com about the script. “We took a long time to write it. We threw out a lot of pages, because we didn't want to settle for a predictable script. We wanted it to feel like a ‘Sinister’ sequel, the kind of sequel we would want to see because we're such fans of the genre. We both know horror franchises so well, and we're both pretty sensitive to how they can go awry, what you don't want to see. I think we found just the right angle for it; it's fresh and unpredictable yet provides the kind of stuff you want to see from a ‘Sinister’ sequel.”

Details on the sequel’s story are scarce, but an ad on Simon Casting’s Facebook page stated “We're looking for girls, ages 8-12, who speak Norwegian for a role in a horror feature film. ... The project begins shooting in mid-August in Chicago.” The Illinois Film Office’s Betsy Steinberg confirmed the ad is for “Sinister 2.”

Blumhouse – which is behind the “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious” franchises – made the first “Sinister” on the cheap, as the studio is known to do. Boxofficemojo.com reported the movie was made for $3 million and grossed $77 million worldwide.
