  1. Daytrippers: The Schooner Argia

Daytrippers visits Mystic's scenic landscape and climbs aboard the Schooner Argia. This modern replica of a 19th century sailing schooner is docked near the quaint downtown and provides tourists a chance to see the coast from onboard a ship.  Argia is a replica of a Chesapeake Bay cargo ship that would have carried tobacco or lumber.  Many passengers come from the Mystic Seaport and get to rest their feet and feel the wind as they see the historic buildings from the water.  "A boat view of the coastal line, it's pretty interesting," says Mike Johnson from Pennsylvania.  "You can see more than driving or walking."  Captain Isaac Henry, who has worked aboard the Argia for about a year, agrees:   "It's nice that they can see the two different perspectives from walking through versus the waterside."  Historic ships, such as the Charles W. Morgan and the Sabino, are easily visible from up on deck.

  3. Daytrippers: Whale Watch

The Privateer IV is docked in Gloucester, Massachusetts, one of the oldest seaports in the country. It is a high speed vessel, owned by 7 Seas Whale Watch and, every summer, visitors flock to it's decks to travel out into the open waters in hopes of meeting majestic creatures of the sea. Oftentimes, the boat heads for Jeffreys Ledge on the northern end of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. "It's a very biologically rich area and it's been recognized that it is an important feeding area for different species of whales," said naturalist Jay Frontierro, who has worked for 7 Seas for 22 years. "Remember, this is a nature trip, so we're never sure what we're going to get," smiled Frontierro, noting that Humpbacks, Finbacks and Minke whales are the most common mammals to spy off the coast of the north shore during the warm weather. But, "we sometimes see sharks," he added.

  15. Consultants to track sources of waterway contamination

On good days, the Tiber Hudson tributary of the Patapsco is a pleasant part of the scenery in Historic Ellicott City as it flows through a stone channel by Tonge Row, beneath Tiber Alley alongside Main Street and past the B&O Railroad Museum before it spills into the river. It's a troubled waterway nonetheless, not considered able to support life, paved over in spots and surrounded by lots of asphalt.

  17. Is the Bay Foundation ignoring the threat behind the Conowingo Dam?

Why does the Chesapeake Bay Foundation refuse to take seriously the threat posed by the Conowingo Dam's inability to hold back Susquehanna River pollution? With respect to the effect of Susquehanna River pollutants, the bay foundation has taken an inexplicable U-turn in its long-held doctrine regarding pollutants and the Chesapeake.

  19. Storm triggers big Howard sewage spill

Sandy knocked out power to Howard County's "water reclamation" plant in Savage, causing 20 to 25 million gallons of untreated but rain-diluted human waste to spill into the Little Patuxent River, a branch of one of the Chesapeake Bay's most degraded tributaries. County Executive Ken Ulman called the outage "unacceptable" and called for a "full audit" of how to prevent future overflows.
