  • READER SUBMITTED: Thank You

April 3, brought a terrible loss to two longtime businesses in Torrington and as Chief I wish we could have achieved a better outcome. As bad as this fire was I take great pride in the effort put forth by members of the Torrington Fire Service and value the opportunity to serve as Chief. I am especially grateful that we had no injuries and were able to protect all the surrounding properties. The response from all mutual aid responders was well coordinated and appreciated. Years of work dedicated to regional planning to provide mutual aid was put to the test. The operation was a joint effort from many organizations without whom the outcome could have been very different. There are only a few times in your career when you will be put to such a test. The strategic decisions made at the beginning of the incident allowed us to keep the fire from spreading outside of the building of origin. The coordination of Torrington PD, Campion Ambulance, dispatchers at LCD & Torrington Fire during the initial stages provided the leadership that led to the final outcome. Many organizations responded to our request for aid: Mutual aid response of fire departments from Torringford, Drakeville, Burrville, Winsted, Waterbury, Thomaston, Litchfield, Watertown, New Hartford, Neapaug, Bantam, Harwinton Westside and those who provided coverage for departments on scene; Hartford County Task Force (Simsbury, Avon, Canton, Burlington, Lost Acres, East Farmington); Fairfield County Task Force (Ridgefield, Danbury, Sandy Hook, Stony Hill), response from the State Foam Trailers (Hartford, Winsted, Danbury, Waterbury and Fairfield). The DEEP to limit environmental damage; Torrington, Winsted and Harwinton Fire Police to direct traffic; Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Emergency Management; Torrington Public Works, Park&Rec and Mayor's Office provided assistance. Torrington BD of ED and its Facilities Manager who coordinated the orderly management of students living in the area;Torrington Area Health for assistance with public health issues.State of CT Fire Marshal's Office for assistance in the investigation; CT DOT for their help with traffic diversion. Assistance from Region 5 and Litchfield County Coordinators was greatly appreciated.Torrington Emergency Management coordinated donations of food and water throughout the day. I don't have names of everyone who donated - I know many just dropped items off and left and I thank you. Those I do know are Torrington Soup Kitchen, FISH, Torrington Municipal & Federal Teachers Credit Union, Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Bogey's/Jimmie's, LaMoncia's, The Venetian, Alfredo's, Scarpelli's, S&S Sweets, Community Systems Inc., The Jones Family, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, American Red Cross, Salvation Army and CT Canteen. All Star Bus Company provided transportation of evacuees; ACE Transmission & Brooker Memorial for use of their facilities. Members of the news media were respectful of the fact that we had a job to do. Thank you for your understanding and coverage of this incident. Thanks to the citizens of this City for their generosity and support. To anyone I have forgotten I apologize and thank you.
