  1. The Top 10 Connecticut Business Stories of 2012

In some ways, 2012 was a carryover year from news of 2011, as the governor continued his aggressive economic development spending, United Technologies Corp. consummated a deal it announced in 2011, and the year's nastiest labor strike grew out of a 2011 lockout. But in the big picture of the state's economy, Connecticut got worse, not better, compared with the nation. That became the state's top business story of 2012 and will shape the scene in 2013.

  3. Calhoun: Guts And Glory

    The Hartford Courant
STORRS — The reality of 40 cold New England winters are behind him. We begin with the Jim Calhoun legend now, and when legend becomes fact, they say, print the legend. UConn, ranked No. 1 in the nation, was up three against Syracuse with 11...

  5. Finally, A Day To Celebrate Hockey In Hartford

    The Hartford Courant
It was 1989 and Todd Krygier, a little-known NHL newcomer, was sitting among a handful of Canadian teammates on the Whalers team bus. They wanted to know where he was from, so the American kid told them. "UConn," Krygier said. They thought he meant...

  11. Crackdown On School Bus Idling Welcome

For reasons that should be obvious, children emerging from school at the end of the day should not be discharged into a fog of diesel exhaust. Thus it's good to see — for the second time this year — the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency...

  13. Nafe Katter Theatre in Storrs Tackles Romeo and Juliet

In Connecticut Repertory Theatre's new production of William Shakespeare's classic love story <em>Romeo and Juliet</em>, Mercutio (Andrea Pane, left), Romeo (Will Haden, center) and Benvolio (Ryan Marcone) do what any sensible teenage men of their time would do: duel, talk about stuff endlessly, chase girls and fall in love. Romeo and Juliet get a little love-crazy during a random meeting, even though Juliet's already spoken for. The play is one of the most popular and frequently staged works; CRT's version draws upon both Renaissance and contemporary elements to tell the tale. (Spoiler alert: this one doesn't end so well.)

  15. Jake Shimabukuro Performs at the Jorgensen in Storrs on Nov. 29

There's a Jake Shimabukuro of any instrument. You could say Jimi Hendrix was the Jake Shimabukuro of the electric guitar, or that Bonzo was Led Zep's resident Shimabukuro behind the skins. You wouldn't be way off the mark to suggest Winston Churchill was the Jake Shimabukuro of international diplomacy. FDR Shimabukuro-d the hell out of the Great Depression. Alas, there's only one JS of the ubiquitous ukelele, that diminutive stringed device usually heard strangled to near-death up by the register of Guitar Center. He does things you wouldn't believe. (Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" on the ukelele? C'mon, now.) Head to Storrs on Nov. 29, and hear a uke transformed into a symphony orchestra.

  19. SNL's Kenan Thompson Brings His Stand-Up Act to the Jorgensen in Storrs

It's taken Kenan Thompson (pictured) seven years to become a breakout performer on Saturday Night Live. But over the years, few cast members have been as consistently funny, their recurring characters as memorable, or their short time in the spotlight so well used as Thompson. He's the buoyant host of What's Up With That? who can't stop busting out his theme song (much to the chagrin of perpetual guest Lindsey Buckingham). He's the inmate brought in to scare juvenile offenders. He's Rev. Al Sharpton. Grady Wilson. Bill Cosby. The list goes on and on. The babyfaced Thompson has starred in a number of non-SNL shows and movies over the years &mdash; "All That," "Kenan and Kel," "Good Burger," "Snakes on a Plane" &mdash; and next he'll be seen in the comedy "Wieners." Thompson brings his stand-up to Storrs on Tuesday.
