1. 2013 Senior Studio Exhibition at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts

We are a little over a month away from welcoming the Class of 2013 into the "real world." As is typical for this time of year, college seniors start to get antsy and procrastinate-y, as the weather turns nice (or is supposed to, anyway) and the end of their college journey is clearly visible. For seniors studying at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, slacking off would be a very bad idea. Fine art requires attention and dedication. Also, their final projects are on display for the public, so half-assing it would be kind of embarrassing. You can view the results of the seniors' Senior Studio program, the culmination of their studies at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, where the seniors put everything they've learned into practice. The opening reception happens this Friday, April 12, from 6-8 p.m. and the students will be present alongside their hard work.

  7. Book Takes New Look At Mob Boss Whitey Bulger

For a long stretch while he was on the lam from 1995 to 2011, James "Whitey" Bulger had to be content as the FBI's second most wanted man. Osama Bin Laden topped the list. But thanks to Navy Seal Team 6, in early May 2011 Bulger graduated to the top spot. The man who led Boston's Irish mob for decades and who secretly helped the FBI decimate his ethnic rivals in the Mafia, murdered dozens of people — many quite innocent and some with his bare hands — had a final exclamation point on his resume of crime.

  9. Sea Tea Improv Performs at Old Lyme's Florence Griswold Museum on March 22

The cut-ups of Sea Tea Improv (pictured) invade the coast this Friday, when they take over Old Lyme's Florence Griswold Museum for a night of hilarity. It's part of the Museum's Hot Air Club program, where attendees socialize, drink signature cocktails (one will be provided this evening) and laugh hysterically. Every Sea Tea show is different, basing sketches on audience suggestions and creating participatory games. This isn't sit-on-your-hands stuff. The show starts at 6:30 p.m.

  19. Gourmet Vegetarian Fare At Six Main

The food at Six Main is outstanding. And it's made almost entirely from plants. The dishes themselves sound like simple, hearty fare: chowder, pasta, meatloaf, gelato. But some culinary alchemy transforms raw veggies into pasta and avocado into ice cream. There's no fish in the chowder, no meat in the meatloaf. You might not even notice what your food is missing unless you ask.

  21. Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts Hosting a Student Art Competition

It's not enough to just foster arts programming in schools. When our children take an interest or show a talent in the arts, their love and talent must also be fostered with care, opportunity and experience. The Shoreline Arts Alliance has hosted a juried comeptition and exhibition of student art for 30 years, and this year's exhibit opens Feb. 21 at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, in the Sill House Gallery. Students either living or attending high school in shoreline towns (Branford, Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Durham, East Haven, East Lyme, Essex, Guilford, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Madison, Middlefield, North Branford, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Salem and Westbrook) are eligible to compete for thousands of dollars in prizes, and the recognition a budding artist thrives on.
