  11. New Book Tells Story Of Connecticut's Earliest Peoples

In her grandly illustrated, thick, literate new book, Lucianne Lavin takes us way, way back to the arrival of human beings in Connecticut. She helps us stretch our concept of time. "Connecticut's Indigenous Peoples" is at once an intimate story about North America's first people and a sweeping narrative covering 15,000 years of roaming, settling and bringing us inexorably up to the Indians of today.

It's not really "unofficially" summer until Mystic Seaport hosts its Sea Music Festival. Performers featured at this year's festival include Jon Campbell, Geoff Kaufman, The S.S. Chanteens, Cliff Haslam (pictured), and Sasiedzi ("the Neighbors"), a group from Poland who keeps the country's love of sea music alive after it first emerged under Communism. The Music of the Sea Symposium Part 1 is June 7, 9 a.m. at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, McAllister Hall Auditorium (31 Mohegan Ave., New London), and Part 2 is June 8, 9:30 a.m. at Greenmanville Church.
