3. The Scoop: Where to Find Gluten-Free Donuts, and Other Baked Essentials

Saturday is Doughnut Day at Dee's One Smart Cookie in Glastonbury. We'll often head there — my kids and I — all the way from West Hartford, looking for a blueberry, a chocolate or on old-fashioned. It's the kind of trip I made with my dad growing up in Jersey, and I'll be damned if I don't drill a similar donut tradition into their heads before they get too old.

  5. The type rider's tour

Here comes Maya Stein on her bicycle, gliding below the historic clock tower at Dearborn Station. Stein is a writer and turned 40 in May. She has the lithe figure of someone who routinely takes transcontinental treks on her 10-speed. Yet this is her first trip of such ambition, a 1,300-mile, 40-day ride from Amherst, Mass. to Milwaukee. On day 36, she arrived at the Printers Row Lit Fest in Chicago. It's 9 a.m. on Saturday, the heat already in the mid-80s and climbing. When a million books around you are baking in the sun, it smells like the library section with all the historical hardcovers, a musty scent of erudition.

  7. 5 Cool Food Trucks Around New Haven

Somewhere between the metropolitan staple the food cart and the usual sit down dining experience is the food truck, an increasing trend in the evolutionary ladder of dining out. Generally offering street-cart service with restaurant quality meals, food trucks are a hungry working man or woman’s dream.

  9. Crime & Punishment: Thief Steals Chinese Food Delivery Car, Continues Making Deliveries

In the 11th hour of her Senate campaign, Republican Linda McMahon tried to align herself with President Barack Obama in Connecticut's overwhelmingly Democratic cities. Flyers distributed in Hartford, Bridgeport and New Haven featured pictures of both and read, "President Barack Obama and Linda McMahon will fight for us." They failed to mention that McMahon is a Republican or that she supported Obama's opponent, Mitt Romney. She even hired African-American temp workers to stand outside polls passing out flyers while wearing pro-McMahon/pro-Obama T-shirts, but not even they were convinced. Natasha Parker, stationed in New Haven, told the New Haven Independent news website that her temporary job in the McMahon campaign "doesn't mean I have to vote for her." (McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, lost, despite having poured $97 million of her own money into two attempts at the Senate.)

  13. Ukulele Advocate: Uke Society

When I started playing uke a decade ago, it was a solitary pursuit. (Pursuke?) The phrase I remember hearing a lot when I was arranging ukulele shows at Café Nine was “Oh, he’ll play. He’s got a ukulele in the closet.” Nobody was brandishing the uke as a primary instrument. But every notable guitarist in the scene seemed to have a uke in the closet.

  17. Crime & Punishment: Woman Crashes Her Car After Drinking Hand Sanitizer

The Hartford Board of Education gave Superintendent Christina Kishimoto a tepid performance review, and thus it is declining to give her a performance bonus this year. Jeffrey Mirman, an attorney for Kishimoto, took issue with this. The review graded the superintendent in four areas, giving her a score from 1 to 5 in each. Her average score was 2.6, about 52 percent of a perfect score. Because Kishimoto's contract states she is "eligible" for a $30,000 bonus for meeting such goals, Mirman told the Hartford Courant she should get $15,450, about 52 percent of the total bonus she could have gotten. By this logic, if the board had given Kishimoto a 1, the lowest possible score, in every category, it would still owe her an extra $6,000. Only by not coming to work, perhaps, should she be denied anything above her base salary, which is $231,000 a year. (Kishimoto eventually relented and said "pursuit of a bonus, even if contractually obligated, is an unnecessary distraction.")
