  1. Verrazano: The Bridge Connecting Connecticut To The Derby

Verrazano, an awesome equine bridge between balance and size, was bred to run. Heading into the 139th Kentucky Derby, that part is undeniable. Bryan Sullivan is another story. He still chuckles when he thinks about that day 16 years ago at Monmouth Park.

  3. Kevin Hunt: Why Are Some New MDC Water Fees 'Astronomical'?

A glass of tap water, a cold shower and hosing down the car will cost every Metropolitan District Commission customer more this year. The reality of fee increases, following a vote of the MDC's member towns last November to fund the second phase of the Clean Water Project, finally arrived this month with the year's first quarterly bill.

  5. Kevin Hunt: West Hartford Company Pumps Too Much Oil: Does Customer Pay?

When the home heating-oil pump doesn't stop pumping, someone has to pay.
    The Hartford Courant
When the home heating-oil pump doesn't stop pumping, someone has to pay. But who? Andrew Campbell of Cromwell asked Northeast Energy in early March to pump 100 gallons, and no more, that would be paid for with a Joe-4-Oil voucher, a Citizens Energy...

  7. Going Green While Keeping Cool, Part II

Last week’s column looked at a major change set to take place in automotive air conditioning. The industry is switching refrigerants used in vehicle air conditioners, with HFO-1234yf replacing HFC-134a. The reason for this switch is because HFO-...

  9. Staying Cool while Going Green

Back in the early 1990's, automotive air conditioning started to grab headlines in the mass media. The reason was simple: R-12, the refrigerant used in auto air conditioners at the time, was being banned. The problem with R-12 wasn’t in its...

  11. Red Light Camera Proponents Try Again At Capitol

Red light cameras are back at the state Capitol in Hartford as proponents make their annual — and, up to now, perennially unsuccessful — attempt to win legislative approval to enable Connecticut cities and towns to install electronic enforcement systems at intersections.

  13. Kevin Hunt: Carnival Triumph Fallout: What Are Cruise Passengers' Rights?

After five days adrift in the Gulf of Mexico with no working toilets, sewage oozing down walls and no air conditioning in their cabins, passengers on the Carnival Triumph cruise ship were offered a full refund, reimbursed on-board expenses, a free flight home, a free future cruise and a check for $500.

  15. A New Look At CT Poverty

    The Hartford Courant
If someone told you the total number of Connecticut residents living under the poverty line rose by 21 percent between 1990 and 2010, and that Hartford was by far the poorest city in the state, you'd figure the capital city led the way in the growth of...

  17. Bringing The Charter Oak And East Coast Greenways Out To Bolton Notch

OK, I'll admit it. A few years ago, I was losing hope that the gaps along the Charter Oak Trail and Hop River Trail would ever be filled.

OK, I'll admit it. A few years ago, I was losing hope that the gaps along the Charter Oak Trail and Hop River Trail would ever be filled. But then, in fall 2011, a section of the Charter Oak Trail, a multiuse path through East Hartford and Manchester,...

  19. Charter Oak Greenway Extension Lives Up To Potential

While walking the most recent extension of the Charter Oak Greenway in Manchester, I didn't really see the clear Birch Mountain Brook as it tumbled through a ravine filled with hemlocks. I didn't look at the couple enjoying lunch on a picnic table near the end of the extension. I didn't grab my binoculars and watch the red-tailed hawk silently watching his surroundings from high on the limb of a dead tree.

  23. The Top 10 Connecticut Business Stories of 2012

In some ways, 2012 was a carryover year from news of 2011, as the governor continued his aggressive economic development spending, United Technologies Corp. consummated a deal it announced in 2011, and the year's nastiest labor strike grew out of a 2011 lockout. But in the big picture of the state's economy, Connecticut got worse, not better, compared with the nation. That became the state's top business story of 2012 and will shape the scene in 2013.
