1. Our Picks: Three Gypsy Swing Shows in Fairfield County

Django Reinhardt is credited with more or less inventing gypsy jazz while living in Paris in the 1930s, and since then no one's done it quite as well as he did. This week there are three musical events in Fairfield County alone that pay homage to Reinhardt's unique and evocative style.

  7. Colin Hay performs at The Ridgefield Playhouse on April 29

Colin Hay was once the front man of Men At Work. But for the past 15 years, he's been doing his one-man acoustic show and building a loyal following of fans who may or may not even be aware of his '80s fame. He's also been a member of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band and gotten some sweet movie and TV placements, like a spot on the popular Garden State soundtrack ("I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You"). It's been an impressive, multi-faceted career, and it only continues to get better with time. See him Sunday night at the Ridgefield Playhouse.

  9. Our Picks: Javier Colon and Taylor Hicks both performing in Fairfield County this weekend

This week, we've got two performers in town who've made names for themselves by winning those TV talent shows that people seem to enjoy so much for some reason. Taylor Hicks won "American Idol"back in 2006 and Stratford native Javier Colon won"The Voice" just last year. See 'em both, live and in person, if you can rip yourselves away from your TVs for a couple of hours.

  11. The Nature of Things: Two films explore fundamental questions

A brutal attack in the dead of night—the recurring nightmare of Henry (Rick Gomez), a successful novelist with a loving wife (Vinessa Shaw). After a farewell party thrown by his publisher (Bryan Cranston), Henry goes into isolation at his remote second home to try to turn his anxieties into fiction. Then a seemingly chance meeting with a mysterious drifter (Frank John Hughes) at a roadside restaurant offers a revelation that, if trusted, might be life-altering. But is the man who he claims to be?

  13. Our Picks: 3 great "open air" art exhibits showing this week

En plein air literally translates to "in the open air," referring to painters who practice their craft in the great outdoors instead of in the controlled-environment of a studio. There are a few exhibits in Fairfield County galleries right now that feature such works, and with the mercury rising as of laste, we might as well do as much as we can en plein air for a while.

  15. Colin Quinn's one-man show comes to The Ridgefield Playhouse on Feb. 17

First he was the host of MTV'sgame show "Remote Control." Then he did "SNL" for five seasons. Then he had his own show, "Tough Crowd With Colin Quinn." And now he's got a one-man live show filled with observational humor and commentary about human history and the demise of empires (including our own) that's directed by Jerry Seinfeld. Not a bad career for Mr. Colin Quinn. He'll bring this new show, Long Story Short, to the Ridgefield Playhouse on Friday, Feb. 17th.

  17. Cowboy Junkies play songs from the Nomad series, older hits at Ridgefield Playhouse on Feb. 26

Cowboy Junkies — Toronto-based siblings Margo, Michael and Peter Timmins and Alan Anton — have been known to knock out considerable amounts of material in relatively short periods of time. Since 1986, they’ve released at least one studio or live album every two years or so, and they recorded their multi-platinum selling breakthrough, 1988’s The Trinity Sessions (with its terrific cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane”), in a mere 14 hours, hovering around a single microphone.

  23. Wilson Phillips at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Feb. 23

I know that there is pain. But you hold on for one more day. Break free from the chains. Yeah, that was Wilson Philips. You know the words. Everyone does. Hear them sung live at the Ridgefield Playhouse on Thursday night. It's Brian Wilson's daughters (the Beach Boy) and Michelle and John Phillip's daughter (The Mamas and the Papas), and they're back on the scene after their mega-radio-hits 20 years ago.
