Brian Urlacher teamed with fellow linebacker Lance Briggs to form the core of a dominant defense that helped the Bears reach Super Bowl XLI under former coach Lovie Smith.

Not surprisingly, Urlacher sees nothing wrong with good friend Briggs receiving permission from Bears coach Marc Trestman to miss practice Monday to attend the grand opening of his northern California restaurant.

Asked Wednesday on “The Kap & Haugh Show” on WGWG-FM (87.7) about any possible impact this latest Bears drama could have, Urlacher said, “The only drama that it created was in the media and maybe the fans. … You look at his resume, what the guy’s done in the NFL. … Coach Trestman, it sounds like he trusts Lance for the most part, he should. He knows what Lance is going to do on Sunday. Not an issue … I would think as a teammate, not a big deal. It’s gotten overblown, in my opinion.

“You know, guys have important dates that they have to take during the season sometimes, they have personal things they have to attend to. It just happens. It’s like a normal job, you can take a day off … If you have an 8-to-5 job, you go to work, ‘Oh, I have a dentist appointment, I need to miss so-and-so.’ It’s the same way with us. If we have something come up and we have to miss a day, that’s the way it goes. But it’s a bigger deal when we do it because we are professional football players.”

Urlacher quickly caught himself and noted that he’s no longer an active player and has no interest in being one again.
