Shachar Erez said he put his personal identity aside to defend his country when he joined the Israel Defense Forces as a women almost six years ago. Now as he commands soldiers as a career military man, Erez plans to share his story with West Hartford teens.
While serving in the IDF, Erez transitioned to a man. Erez, now 23, is considered to be the first transgender officer in the IDF.
Erez flew to New York Sunday morning, and before meeting with students at Hall High School in West Hartford Wednesday night, he will also visit with students at NYU, New York City officials, LGBT and Jewish organizations, and do a similar stop in Philadelphia.
