11. Roaming the neighborhoods around Pimlico

Roaming the streets that encircle Pimlico Race Course, I discovered so many places that I had trouble going back to the same locale twice. Outer Northwest Baltimore is a fascinating, at times geographically bewildering, place.

  13. A Journey To A Windswept Island In Goodwin State Forest

Maybe it's because I read "Treasure Island" too many times as a kid. Or maybe it was the islands of grass -- known as "witches heads" -- we would hop across as kids to get to the other side of the swamp.

  19. Visiting The Meriden, Waterbury & Connecticut Railroad In Middletown

Maybe it's the sight of grass and trees growing up through the gravel and railroad ties. Or the rotting trestle that spans a small river and fills the air with a light scent of creosote. It could be the echoes of water dripping in an abandoned tunnel.

  21. Kingsley Guy: South Florida economic future looks good

  23. Quentin Kopp, no longer on board this bullet train

There's a short piece of Bay Area freeway, Interstate 380, named for Quentin Kopp, which is ironic considering that he's beaten the drum for public transit — specifically bullet trains — for years. But then again, he's always been a contrarian, as a Superior Court judge, a San Francisco supervisor and a state senator. He also headed the California High-Speed Rail Authority. The man nicknamed the "Great Dissenter" is dissenting now over the course of his beloved bullet train, created on paper in 2008 with a bond measure, Proposition 1A. Its prospects have been slowed considerably by lawsuits, the latest from the state itself, a preemptive bring-it-on legal action called High-Speed Rail Authority vs. All Persons Interested. Kopp is among the very interested, and the not very happy.
