  1. "Bikes For Kids" Helps Hurricane Sandy Victims

    Last year, I did <a href="http://articles.courant.com/2011-10-10/features/hc-mommy-minute-20111010_1_bikes-chuck-graeb-turkey-dinner" target="_blank">a Mommy Minute story </a>about <a href="http://www.bikes-for-kids.net/" target="_blank">Bikes For Kids</a>, a wonderful, local organization with a simple mission: all children deserve to enjoy a bicycle. &nbsp;In a crammed garage, a few guys refurbish used bikes for boys and girls in need. &nbsp;They are intense about their job, making sure each one is tuned and shined to perfection. &nbsp;Now, this small non-profit, based in Centerbrook and Old Saybrook, is helping families hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and providing bikes to youngsters who lost theirs during the super storm.

    David Freedenberg has an appetite for adventure, and he's making a living off it. After climbing into In his signature Checker cab off 12th Avenue in Manhattan, Freedenberg transforms into his epicurean alter-ego -- "Famous Fat Dave," who chauffeurs guests all over the five boroughs in search of good taste. Officially, the tour is called "Famous Fat Dave's Five Borough Eating Tour on the Wheels of Steel."  Passersby gawked at the iconic motorized orb that used to prowl the pavement of New York.

    In the carnival atmosphere that is New York, hidden in an industrial neighborhood in Long Island City, Queens there is unassuming building that could be called center ring. It's a new venture called "Circus Warehouse", the high flying idea of actress and circus pro Suzi Winson. "It's sort of the next dimension in a way, Winson told us. "We have a recreational program where you can learn all of these things, so people can come off the street and say "I want to try this, I want to try the flying trapeze" and we'll put them in a safety belt and we'll fly them."
