NEW HAVEN — The dream of avenging her 2014 finals loss in New Haven to Petra Kvitova still exists for Magdalena Rybarikova, the 50th-ranked player in the world.
Rybarikova, 26, from Slovakia, needed three sets Saturday to advance to a qualifying final early Sunday afternoon that would move her into the main draw if she wins.
Rybarikova defeated Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, ranked 90th, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 on Saturday. Her Sunday opponent, Christina McHale of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., won two matches on the day, defeating Margarita Gasparyan, of Russia 7-5, 6-1 in the morning, then beating Laura Robson of Great Britain, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
