Currents, waves present risk to lake swimmers

The warm temperatures and active waves lured beachgoers of all ages out to Porter Beach and other spots along Lake Michigan on Monday, but many had 20-year-old drowning victim Chase Froese in the back of their minds as they watched their kids navigate the rough surf. Froese, a native of Carol Stream, Ill., was on her way Friday to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., with two friends when they decided to stop at Porter Beach for a swim. When the women started to struggle in the 3- to 5-foot waves and possible rip current, beachgoers were able to rescue two of the swimmers, but Froese disappeared.
