Tony DiCicco, who coached the U.S. women's soccer teams that won the Olympic gold medal in 1996 and the World Cup in 1999 and who helped inspire a generation of female athletes, died Monday night with his family by his side. DiCicco, 68, was born in Wethersfield and graduated from Wethersfield High in 1966.

DiCicco's son Anthony released a statement Tuesday that read, "while the health challenges [his father] faced were confronted head on and with eyes open, we never could have foreseen the beautiful journey that truly defined the magnificence of this man's life."
