  4. Truck lanes on I-78 will give cars a pass

    <strong><em>Q: A recent article described planned safety improvements to I-78 around the Krumsville interchange. The work will include truck lanes that slow-moving tractor-trailers could use to allow cars to pass safely. That's great, but I must wonder if PennDOT planners have recently traveled on 78 between Route 33 and the Route 309 split. The same conditions often prevail there as well. It is with little exaggeration that I claim to regularly be stuck behind two columns of traffic while a truck going 46 mph passes one doing 45. This creates a serious safety hazard with other traffic flowing at 65 mph or more. When will truck lanes be added to eastbound 78 approaching 33 and westbound 78 just beyond Route 412? I know this situation won't be resolved overnight, but it would be encouraging to know that PennDOT's engines are being revved at the starting line.</em></strong>

    <b><i>Q: My daughter was going west on Center Valley Parkway on a wet afternoon in October when she turned onto the access road leading to Route 309 north, and struck the barrier. Though she and her son recovered fully from their injuries, her car was 'totaled'. Ambulance personnel told her they respond to similar accidents at this intersection several times a month. Subsequently she received a PennDOT demand that she and her insurance company pay $8,575 to repair damage to 37.5 feet of the barrier. She was shocked; there was no way she caused that amount of damage. I realize PennDOT needs money for road repairs, but this intersection is so poorly designed that accidents are going to continue to happen until it is reconfigured. Neither my daughter nor the insurance company should have to pay the amount demanded by PennDOT.</i></b>

  12. PennDOT guide rail blocks resident's off-street space

    <strong><em>Q: I moved to Boston a few months ago, but my adult son is living at our home on Route 611 in Williams Township. Imagine my surprise when visiting him in late June to find a brand new guardrail installed on the canal side of northbound 611, directly across the road from our home. For more than 25 years there was a pull-off space there, as a 'break' in the railing, complete with end caps, that left a space big enough for a car to pull off the road safely. Since 611 has zero shoulder, and there's a blind curve just behind this spot, the pull-off seemed a sensible way to keep disabled cars from being struck from behind. The ground is level and it seems perfectly safe to park there. We also use this space to safely turn left out of our driveway, given the curve and speeding drivers on 611. No notice of this change was given. The ugly rail blocks our view of the canal and river. Ironically, a similar pull-over spot just north of ours was left untouched, though it is smaller and the ground slopes toward the canal. Is there any hope to have this unneeded, unwanted and highly inconvenient rail removed?</em></strong>
