Story | Oct 26, 2013 | 8:11 PMWhat's orienteering? It's akin to a scavenger hunt, but you use a map and compass to find predetermined points, often in woods, and then get back to the start within a set period of time. If you're going a direct route from point to point and not on a trail, you can get quite a workout scrambling over logs and through wet areas. And -- lucky you! -- Wekiwa Springs State Park is having a Public Orienteering Event on Saturday, Nov. 9, with start times from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with event ending at 3 p.m. All are welcome to the event hosted by Florida Orienteering. Participants pay entry fees for Wekiwa Springs State Park, which are $6 per vehicle, up to eight people or $4 for a single-occupant vehicle. Hikers can choose any length trail from 1 to 5 miles. Six courses will be offered, all with a three-hour time limit. Check-in will be at the spring area parking lot. Instruction for novices is available on site. Check floridaorienteering.org for details and more info on orienteering. You also can call 407-672-7070 for more details.
