On The Fly: Legalized Sports Betting To Begin This Weekend In New Jersey
Legalized sports betting is set to begin this weekend in New Jersey at Monmouth Park, but the professional sports leagues and the NCAA are still trying to stop it in court. Initially, allowing sports betting in the state was passed by New Jersey voters and signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie in 2012 to help the struggling Atlantic City casinos. The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL filed a lawsuit, stating that the wagering would hurt the integrity of the game. Currently, under the Professional Sports and Amateur Act of 1992, only four states are allowed to have state-sanctioned sports gambling. But if there is already sports betting in Las Vegas, one New Jersey lawmaker told the Star-Ledger, how could this hurt? "It's very difficult for me to understand how the league can say [betting] would cause irreparable damage to sporting events when bets are already being taken in Nevada," state Sen. Raymond Lesniak said. "I expect us to [have bets] on Sunday." Monmouth Park is the only place equipped to handle sports betting this weekend, but other racetracks and the casinos are expected to start soon, depending on what happens in court this week.
