    My father, Bill Guilfoile, was a baseball executive for 40 years with the New York Yankees, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also a compulsive reader, and it's no surprise that his favorite subject was the game that has probably produced more written words — and certainly more literature — than any sport in history. Dad has Alzheimer's now, so he couldn't compile this list himself. Indeed, he's so diplomatic that I don't know he would have agreed to do it; he'd be too reluctant to leave anyone out. But from the hours and hours he and I spent talking about baseball and books, I can make a list of five classic works I know he loved dearly.
