  • On The Fly: Fourth Of July Has Sporting Connections, Too

Happy Independence Day, sports fans. The day of patriotism, fireworks and backyard barbecues is tied closely to the names in our games. None of other than George M. Steinbrenner — who provided his share of fireworks in the Bronx — was born on this day in 1930. Nine years later, Lou Gehrig delivered his "Luckiest Man" speech at Yankee Stadium on July 4. Dave Righetti no-hit the Red Sox in 1983 and John McEnroe beat five-time reigning champion Bjorn Borg in the 1981 Wimbledon finals, both iconic Fourth of July events. But here's where we are in 2015: Joey Chestnut is the new king of July Fourth "sports." Our gluttonous hero will be chomping for his ninth consecutive title at the Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest Saturday at noon. The spectacle will be beamed into your living room on ESPN2, if you've got the stomach for this sort of thing. Chestnut, according to the New York Post, is focused on the competition and will perhaps be eating his feelings after an emotional break up with his fiance. If you're keeping score at home, he set the world record by downing 69 wieners in 2013 and he inhaled 61 last year. Our takeaway? Don't invite him to your next barbecue, unless you own stock in Oscar Mayer.
