We come to praise Howard Baldwin, not to bury him.
We come to praise Howard Baldwin, not to bury him. Mr. Baldwin, who energized Hartford three decades ago by bringing the Hartford Whalers of the World Hockey Association to town and then ushering the team into the National Hockey League, came back to...

  3. 6/28/2012-Hockey Dreams Die Hard

Hockey is a family sport to me. I've had a lot of fun at hockey games with my family at various venues from watching amateurs at a local skating rink in Bolton to the Bruins at the Boston TD Garden. I was a regular at the Civic Center when Ronnie Francis and Kevin Dineen led the Whalers back in the last century. I've only been to a couple of Hartford Whale games with friends, so I have to admit I'm not a hard core fan of minor league hockey.

As the green-and-blue uniforms hit the ice a few minutes before 7 p.m. Saturday, "Brass Bonanza" filled the XL Center and 13,089 fans reveled in the nostalgia of the moment. "It feels like old times," Howard Baldwin said. And there was indeed a sense...

  9. Howard Baldwin Knows It Wouldn't Pay To Fight For Two Letters

The old Howard Baldwin probably would have fought this fight. In those days, the 30-year-old blond WHA rebel would be told he shouldn't do something by the hockey establishment, do the opposite and then dare the old codgers to do something about it....

  15. Whalers' Gordie Howe Retires

    The Hartford Courant
Reluctantly, wistfully, and perhaps a bit skeptically an era officially came to end Wednesday. Gordie Howe, in the wanning stages of his fantastic and almost unbelievable 32-year career, often joked that he would retire when everybody else did -- at the...

  23. Movie review: 'A Sound of Thunder'

    Tribune staff reporter
1 star (out of four) In any era, the time-travel adventure movie "A Sound of Thunder" is just awful. Set in 2055 Chicago and in an undisclosed location 63 million years ago, it follows a team of temporal safari guides trying to save the world after a...
