New 3-on-3 OT format brings excitement to NHL

After scoring the NHL's first-ever game-deciding goal in the newly instituted 3-on-3 overtime format in a preseason victory over the Predators, Panthers rookie defenseman Mike Matheson called it "organized pond hockey."

"It's incredible," Matheson said. "There's chance after chance. If you fall asleep for a second, you're giving the other team point-blank chances. It seems like a tennis match going back and forth.

"Shootouts? I don't think it'll get that far."

That's exactly what the majority of league executives wanted, especially Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon. He has been trumpeting this rule change for the past few years...
