California Chrome wins Horse of the Year for second time at Eclipse Awards

Arrogate won the battle at the Breeders' Cup but California Chrome won the war for the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year. The announcement was made Saturday night at the annual gala at Gulfstream Park.

The Horse of the Year nod was the second for California Chrome, who also was voted racing's highest honor in 2014 when he captured the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He was almost perfect in 2016, winning six of seven starts, all stakes, including the $10 million Dubai World Cup. The lone blemish was a half-length defeat by Arrogate in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
