  • Today's cheerleading is a brave new world

We are, among other things, a cheerleading family here at the Lenhoff's. And I don't just mean Daughters No. 1 and 2, in their youth. I'm going much farther to "the way way back," to quote one recent movie title, to my days as a junior high cheerleader. In those ancient times, particularly at my small parochial school, we did things using the seat-of-the-pants method. Took the train with the entire squad to a large department store where we bought matching soft fuzzy and oh-so-preppy mohair cable knit sweaters in soft white. Had a pom-pom party, rolling dozens of sheets of blue and white crinkled tissue paper into a tight cylinder, then making dozens of cuts to reveal a "pom" of long trails of those sheets, secured with some good sturdy tape at the end for our hands to grasp. There were no lifts, no flyers, maybe two jumps, and quite a bit of loud yelling. But believe me, we were pretty impressed with ourselves as the cheer ambassadors for the school.

Edgy's football blog | Looking to transfer? Enjoy sitting
The days of high school athletes staying at one high school for four years seems as outdated as MySpace. Name the high school sport and I promise you the rash of kids transferring is an issue. I wish most kids were transferring for a better academic...
