Based on Elizabeth Strout's novel, the film explores the secret yearnings of Amy, a lonely, shy 15-year-old girl, and her repressed, single mother, Isabelle, a secretary at the local mill. Their lives are routine until Amy becomes sexually involved with her high school math teacher. When Isabelle discovers the clandestine affair, her punishment of Amy is severe and leads to a devastating crisis that will only be resolved when Isabelle confronts the shame she feels about events in her own past.
