FOXBOROUGH — Surprise, surprise.
The Patriots made a pair of moves that caught nearly everyone off guard Saturday, releasing veteran receiver Reggie Wayne and running back Jonas Gray as the team got its roster to the league-mandated 53.
Wayne, who received a $450,000 signing bonus Aug. 24, reportedly asked for his release. Gray appeared poised to be the opening night starter with No. 1 back LeGarrette Blount suspended.
Wayne had played in a pair of exhibition games (two catches on 11 targets) and had a handful of practices to learn the offense and the playbook. He acknowledged after the Carolina game that New England's playbook "wasn't simple,'' and it's unknown...
