Lions sign tight end Deon Butler

The Detroit Lions signed former Central Michigan tight end Deon Butler Saturday. Butler was with the Lions for rookie minicamp in May and had a recent workout with the team. He'll take the place of Jordan Thompson, who's expected to go on season-ending injured reserve after leaving Thursday's preseason loss to Washington with a knee injury. Butler caught 30 passes for 424 yards for the Chippewas last year. The Lions already have lost two tight ends who were competing for roster spots to season-ending injuries.
