1. Bird Cruise

Intrigue surrounds this evening excursion. "Riverquest" abandons the shores of Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam in search of a "secret spot" where a bird phenomonon occurs every September. We cruise down the gorgeous Connecticut River, passing the historic swing bridge and The Goodspeed Opera House. We spy a few Bald Eagles along the way, but this trip isn't about those majestic creatures. It focuses on a much more common bird with very unusual flight behavior.

  15. Australia has a hold on 'Iceman' of martial arts

Ultimate Fighting fans know Chuck Liddell as The Iceman. But since retiring last year, the 41-year-old mixed martial artist now is known as The EVP -- the executive vice president of business development for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He also is featured in the new DVD and Blu-ray release "UFC: Bad Blood -- Liddell vs. Ortiz," which documents Liddell's long-standing rivalry with fellow MMA superstar Tito Ortiz. Liddell, who also competed on "Dancing With the Stars," jokes that taking a roundhouse kick to the face is nothing compared with mastering the pasodoble.

  21. Self-tanning products have come a long way

The deleterious effects of self-tanning products — streaky brown or Oompa-Loompa orange skin — have faded considerably over the past couple years, due in large part to advances in formulations and delivery methods that make a DIY tan easier to acquire. These advances, coupled with a stronger awareness of sun damage and the potential harmful effects of UV lights in tanning beds, have inspired more of us to slather on the bronze, rather than run the risk of skin cancer or premature aging.
