    Pitcher Shawaryn breaks Terps' career wins record
    Sophomore right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn earned his 21st career victory to break the Maryland's all-time record as the No. 20 Terps topped Purdue, 12-3, in Game 1 of a doubleheader Friday night at Alexander Field in West Lafayette, Ind. The Carneys Point, N.J., native struck out 10 over seven innings and did not walk a batter. Shawaryn, the reigning National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Week, was dominant over his seven innings. He retired the first six batters of the game and allowed just four hits. He has not given up a run in his past 20 innings. Shawaryn's 21 wins are the most for any sophomore in the country. He has struck out 92 batters, most in the Big Ten. Junior Kevin Martir finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Freshman Kevin Smith added three runs. Junior Jose Cuas had two hits and two RBIs. Maryland won the second game, 7-3, to improve to 29-13 overall and 10-4 in the Big Ten; Purdue is 13-30 and 1-13.
