Maryland ties school record for Graduation Success Rate
The University of Maryland tied its all-time high institutional Graduation Success Rate of 86 percent in figures released Tuesday by the NCAA. It marks the fifth time in the 10-year history of the metric that Maryland has been above 80 percent and the fifth straight year the campus set or tied a school record. Maryland's previous-best GSR of 86 percent came in 2013. Maryland's four-year Federal Graduation Rate for student-athletes was 70 percent, 4 percentage points higher than the overall NCAA Division I average. The Graduation Success Rate is a four-year measure of freshmen and transfer student-athletes who entered Maryland from the fall of 2004 to the spring of 2008. It does not penalize the institution for those student-athletes who transfer from Maryland in good academic standing, as the FGR does. In addition, the GSR includes student-athletes who transfer into the institution and receive athletics aid, unlike the FGR. The Maryland men's basketball program had a 100 percent GSR for the first time in program history; the NCAA average was 72 percent. The football program posted a mark of 74 percent; the NCAA average was 71 percent. Women's basketball posted a GSR score of 92 percent; the NCAA average was 85 percent. The overall national average was 82 percent. "I am very proud of the progress our student-athletes are making in the classroom," athletic director Kevin Anderson said. "Our goal is to be the best Intercollegiate Athletics program in the country and in doing so, graduating and preparing our student-athletes for life after Maryland are of the utmost importance."
