  • Healey's late goal helps U.S. rally to Arena Soccer win

Healey's late goal helps U.S. rally to Arena Soccer win
Blast defender Pat Healey (Calvert Hall, Towson University) scored a sixth-attacker goal with 2:22 left and assisted on Evan McNeley's power-play goal 38 seconds later as the United States rallied for a 5-4 win over the Czech Republic in the WMF Arena Soccer World Cup in San Diego. Healey, a first-team All-Major Arena Soccer League selection and the league's Defender of the Year, put on the goalkeeper's jersey to attack with 2:45 left, manning the point of attack before getting close enough to launch a rocket straightaway from the attacking red line, beating keeper Marek Gruber top shelf for the equalizing goal. "I'm comfortable with being the sixth attacker," Healey said. "We only had to do it a couple times this year [with the Blast], but we work on it all the time. They sagged in a little low and I had room to shoot." The Americans won Group A and advanced to the quarterfinals against Germany tonight in Tulsa, Okla., with the winner facing Romania or Canada.
