The University of Connecticut women's basketball program played its first game for coach Sandra Hamm on Dec. 5, 1974, defeating state rival Eastern Connecticut, 40-27. By the time it played its 1,000th game on Nov. 25, 2007 against Duke for the championship of the Paradise Jam Tournament in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, the Huskies had grown into the one of the most dynamic programs in the nation. Under Geno Auriemma, who became coach on May 17, 1985, the Huskies have been to eight Final Fours and won five Division I national championships, four over five seasons from 2000-2004, including three straight from 2002-04. They have won 15 Big East regular-season title and 13 conference tournament titles. The Huskies are also the only program in Division I history to go undefeated and win the national champions in two separate seasons: 1994-95 (35-0) and 2001-02 (39-0). On the way to the 2003-04 national championship, UConn broke the NCAA record for consecutive wins with 70. UConn has produced 10 first-team All-Americans, including Rebecca Lobo, Jennifer Rizzotti, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi. They also had four players selected in the first round of the 2002 WNBA draft Bird, Swin Cash, Asjha Jones and Tamika Williams. UConn has had 17 players drafted by the WNBA.
