Former PC Star, New England Legend Marvin Barnes Dies

Marvin Barnes, one of the greatest basketball players to come out of New England, died Monday in Providence. He was 62.

Barnes, nicknamed "Bad News" for his off-the-court troubles, which included substance abuse and brushes with the law, later played in the American Basketball Association and the NBA. His addiction to drugs curtailed his career, leaving many to wonder how good a player he might have become.

Barnes, a high school star in Providence, is best remembered as the centerpiece of Providence College teams that captivated the region and reached the Final Four in 1973, beating Maryland in the East Region Final.
