Former NBA guard Chris Herren struggled with substance abuse for years.
His drug and alcohol addiction derailed a promising basketball career long before a fourth overdose when he was in his mid-30s.
Sober now for 10 years, he speaks to thousands of students every year about how it all started and the impact of his decisions, and on Tuesday Herren shared that message with students at Xavier High School in Middletown.
“The focus oftentimes is about the worst day when it comes to addiction and not the first day,” Herren told reporters before his presentation. “Kids need to understand how this begins rather than how it ends.”
