Josh Smith joining Clippers gives little relief to Pistons

It appears the Detroit Pistons won't receive much cap relief with Josh Smith agreeing to join the cap-strapped Los Angeles Clippers. RealGM and other outlets are reporting that Smith, who was waived by the Pistons in December using the NBA's stretch provision, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Clippers for the veteran's minimum. Under the CBA provision, the Pistons owed Smith his $13.5 million this past season and can stretch the remaining $26 million he was owed over the next five seasons, meaning the Pistons will be paying $5.4 million per season through the 2019-20 season.
