Travis Wood didn't quite run through a brick wall for his team.

But he ran into one on July 31.

That's when Wood showed poise in ivy after Cubs manager Joe Maddon ordered the left-handed reliever from the pitcher's mound to left field to start the seventh inning of a chew-your-nails-to-the-nub, extra-inning victory against the Mariners.

Maddon also pinch-hit pitcher Jon Lester, whose two-strike, walk-off squeeze bunt capped the improbable 7-6, 12-inning win during which 22 Cubs played and overcame a six-run deficit.
