Cole lifts Pirates to 2-1 victory over Marlins, wins his 15th game

MIAMI Gerrit Cole pitched into the eighth inning, Pedro Alvarez homered and the Pirates beat the Miami Marlins, 2-1, at Marlins Park on Thursday night to take three of the four games in the series. By winning for the fourth time in five games, the Pirates increased their lead on the Chicago Cubs for home-field advantage in the wild-card game to four games. They are 77-49 and have won 16 of their past 21 games. Strong as that is, they still chase the first-place St. Louis Cardinals, who had won four in a row and 14 of 20 entering their game late Thursday night in Arizona.
