  • Former major-league coach, minor-league manager Gordy MacKenzie dies

    FRUITLAND PARK — Major-league baseball teams mourned the death of Gordy MacKenzie, a Fruitland Park resident who had a long baseball career and served as a coach in the 1980 World Series. McKenzie, who died last week at 77, had a stint in the majors as a catcher with the Kansas City Athletics in 1961 after playing in the minor leagues for eight seasons. He went on to manage in the minors for 16 seasons, leading teams in the organizations of the Washington Senators, New York Mets, Montreal Expos, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians. He also was a major-league coach with Kansas City, the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco and Cleveland. A highlight came when he served as third-base coach for the Royals. In 1980, the Royals played in the their first World Series, falling in six games to the Philadelphia Phillies. "Gordy was an outstanding baseball man that was widely respected not only in our organization, but throughout all of baseball," Quinton McCracken, the Astros' director of player development, said in a statement.
