  • Nationals sign Carp to minor league deal

Already lacking left-handed bats off the bench and suddenly in need of more outfield depth because of Jayson Werth's unexpected shoulder surgery, the Washington Nationals added a player with the potential to fill both needs Tuesday. Washington signed first baseman-outfielder Mike Carp to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training, according to his agent. Carp, 28, was a steady contributor for the Boston Red Sox during their 2013 title run, hitting .296/.362/.523 with nine home runs in 243 at-bats. But Carp struggled last season, hitting .198 in 86 at-bats with Boston before being placed on waivers and claimed by the Texas Rangers — who subsequently designated him for assignment after he went 5-for-40. The Nationals also signed 30-year-old catcher Steven Lerud to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league camp. Lerud spent last season in Triple-A in the Atlanta Braves organization, hitting .250 in 60 games.
