    Gordie Howe is recovering from multiple strokes and is battling dementia, but his family says his condition is improving. Improving so rapidly that Mr. Hockey may appear with Wayne Gretzky at a celebrity sports dinner in Saskatoon on Feb. 6. An email from Marty Howe to The Hockey News says Gordie is making small improvements in his ability to speak and has limited mobility, walking short distances with help. The Howe family also issued a statement Friday that said Gordie, who is living with his daughter in Texas, received stem cell treatment from American doctors two weeks ago in Mexico. He has responded so well to the treatment that he'll apparently travel to Canada. "As a family, we are thrilled that Dad's quality of life has greatly improved, and his progress has exceeded our greatest expectations," the statement said.
