Matt Barnes, the former UConn pitcher from Bethel, has been placed on the disabled list by the Red Sox with a lower back sprain.
To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Hector Velazquez has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Barnes, 27, is 6-3 with a 3.60 ERA, and has been getting plenty of work. Among American League relievers he is tied for second in appearances (59) and ranks third in holds (21). He has pitched 60 innings, which ranks third.
