Five thoughts from the opening weekend of the baseball season:

1. Box scores are back

Oh, sure, they were around in spring training, hiding in plain sight on an agate page near you.

But with all those minor-leaguers playing, closers pitching in the fourth or fifth innings and the starters pitching on back fields or in “B” games instead of in Cactus and Grapefruit League games, they were irrelevant and easy to ignore.

It’s not until the games matter that box scores really come alive, and now we’ll be scanning them for the next six months to find out how our favorite players and teams are faring.
