    Jeff Gray of Newport News, a designated hitter and first baseman at Hampden-Sydney for four years, wrapped up his collegiate career by being named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in baseball. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder earned some form of All-ODAC honors in each of his seasons and set H-SC records for career hits (194) and runs batted in (102). In 2015, he batted .311 and led the Tigers with 38 hits. In the classroom, the biology major boasted a 3.87 grade-point average and is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Chi Beta Phi honors fraternities. His team finished 11-21-1 this season, 8-12 in the ODAC. Gray graduated from Menchville High, where he was a key contributor throughout his years of playing in Coach Phil Forbes' program. He was the starting catcher on a 2009 Monarchs team (26-2) that not only won the state Group AAA championship, but also was named the No. 1 team in the nation in the USA Today Super 25 -- becoming the first Peninsula District squad so honored in any sport.
