Pride Of The Yankees: Helping Fallen Officers' Families
One of the great legacies of George Steinbrenner is the Yankee Silver Shield Foundation, which the late Yankees' owner created in 1982 to fund the education for children of police officers and firefighters in the tri-state area who are killed in the line of duty. The Foundation has already indicated that it will pay for the education of the two sons of Rafael Ramos, one of NYPD officers fatally shot Saturday in Brooklyn. The New York Daily News reported Sunday that the Yankees will pay for the education of Ramos' 13-year-old son Jaden Ramos and for another son who is already in college. The other slain officer, Wenjian Liu, did not have children. The Foundation has funded prep school, undergraduate and graduate school education for more than 1,000 over the past 32 years, covering children of firefighters along with police officers.
