The Red Sox strengthened their bullpen Monday on the first day of the Winter Meetings. Starter Wade Miley was part of a four-player deal with the Mariners that brings Carson Smith to Boston. Smith is a righty sidearmer who had a 2.31 ERA last season and was called Seattle's "best reliever for an otherwise abysmal bullpen" by the Seattle Times, which noted right-handed hitters batted .169 against him, and he struck out 61 of the 159 righties he faced. Seattle fans didn't seem too happy with the deal. Said one on the newspaper's website: "Giving up Carson is tough. I get that sinking feeling again that the BoSox got the best of us again....
