Cards' defense backs Lackey in 3-1 win over Diamondbacks

PHOENIX As sloppily as the St. Louis Cardinals' defense played behind veteran righthander John Lackey last week in a loss at San Diego was as brilliantly as it performed Wednesday night at Chase Field. Lackey, who gained his 11th win in a 3-1 triumph over Arizona, received a diving catch from center fielder Tommy Pham. Second baseman Kolten Wong backhanded a howitzer and initiated a key double play, one of three the Cardinals pulled off. Shortstop Jhonny Peralta and first baseman Mark Reynolds also turned in sparklers and the Cardinals' outfielders spent plenty of time at the warning track.
