  • Readers' Q&A: Mark Gonzales' Cubs mailbag

Readers' Q&A: Mark Gonzales' Cubs mailbag
There are lot of things about the Cubs’ plan that I get. What Theo Epstein is doing with prospects is smart. They need new grandstands and better player amenities. I get all that. What I don't get is the Ricketts' insistence on all the outfield signage, and their claim that these changes are necessary for revenue. This team, when halfway competitive, is one of the three most popular teams in baseball. Attendance is good, they sell tons of merchandise to their huge national fan base, and they surely have a huge new TV contract on the way. The Rays would die to be in their situation. If progress is really dependent on the rooftops and on uglying the ballpark with all this signage, it makes me wonder if this ownership was financially capable of running a big market franchise in the first place. --Mike, Sarasota, Fla.

We can fix him! Most teams are convinced they can remedy whatever it was that went wrong with some fallen star. They can tweak his mechanics, provide needed insight he wasn’t getting elsewhere, give him that fresh start Sometimes it actually works...
