PHOENIX Knowing that closer Trevor Rosenthal was going to be absent from the team for this weekend's series, St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny probably handled the eighth inning on Thursday a tad differently than he might have. He didn't use shutdown eighth-inning man Kevin Siegrist to protect a two-run lead against the Arizona Diamondbacks because Siegrist probably will be the closer against San Francisco as Rosenthal returns to St. Louis to be with his wife, who is about to give birth for the second time.
